18"/dual 12"/1"/dual tweeter (~1981)
The first completely Rat designed system. The 18" sub was tuned at 20 HZ. The PA sounded quite good, especially compared to the other systems of the time. Nearly everything else out there had a big horn in front of it and if they could point the speaker backwards and bounce the sound off of a bunch of wooden panels before it came out of the cabinet, it was considered a good thing. The down side of this system was that it was not as loud as the horn loaded competition and everyone told us that it will not work in larger rooms. We began designing and testing various protection methods to increase system volume and reduce component failures. With the gradual acceptance of this PA in the local LA area we (Brian and Dave) were finally able to quit our jobs at Hughes Aircraft and dedicate our full time to the growing world of Rat. |
