Dave,
After having the chance to check out the Orgasmatron's personally in an arena that I am familiar with (thanks to you and Jim for that!), I've got to say I am impressed. They do everything you said they would for evening out the coverage throughout the whole bowl.
While I wasn't able to get up to the upper deck (didn't really want to deal with Asia any more than necessary!), I was able to walk from the top of the first level down, across the floor, and up the other side of the bowl, both during sound check and with the place full of people during showtime. The coverage was amazingly even - the difference in the impact of the kick for example felt within a few db the entire path of my travel. The only dropoff I found was actually the side edges of the floor going up to the first row of the lower level. Even that wasn't bad - just the only place along my path I could detect a noticible drop out - although less than the normal nodes you would hear on the floor on either side of power alley.
The second thing that I realize only now as I write this, was that this was a general admission floor show - and was quite heavily packed between the stage and FOH - that's a lot of standing bodies piled in there between the subs and the rest of the arena - and it was STILL that even.
As for the orgasmatrons themselves - I did get up near them during sound check and they put out a respectible kick, and as designed, I heard the significant drop off back at monitor world (very nice actually!) During show time I managed to get about 15 feet from them and could feel my chest not being very happy. I did notice that security was NOT standing in front them as during normal shows :) I would guess with the right wave file loaded up, you could use them as defibrillators should the need arise!
During Travis' solo, and the final notes of the show when he seemed to detune his electronics down into the 30Hz range, I am sure that for anyone in the first 50 feet of the arena, the orgasmatron lived up to it's name! My pant legs were shaking at FOH .. I can imagine teeth rattling up closer!
This seems like one of those few times when theory and reality actually coincide.
All that, and you're a nice guy too - who woulda thunk it!
